Elevating Female Leaders Since 1984
Our Story
The Organization of Women Leaders (OWL) was born from a powerful connection and vision to empower female leaders in Hawai‘i.
In 1984, Sharon Narimatsu, then with City Hall, and Shirleyanne Chew of Hawaiian Telephone Company, met at a reception and discovered they shared common concerns as professional women navigating careers in government and business. Recognizing the need for a dedicated space where women leaders could support one another, they took action.
On June 27, 1984, the two invited 15 pioneering women from across the public and private sectors to gather at the Amfac Tower. United by a shared purpose, they envisioned a network where women decision-makers could connect, exchange ideas, and uplift each other—free from political agendas or fundraising pressures.
From that meeting, the Organization of Women Leaders was formed. Just weeks later, on August 3, 1984, officers were elected and the first membership directory proudly listed 56 trailblazing women.
Today, OWL continues to honor this founding vision—bringing together professional women from across sectors to inspire, collaborate, and lead.
